Members of the Chula Vista Police Department said they have successfully captured a believed gang member who may be tied to a recent shooting. The incident took place on March 8 when a suspect opened fire outside of the Bobar Liquor store. No injuries were reported. Responding officers said they used witness accounts along with video surveillance footage to identify the perpetrator.
That man, who was reportedly identified as 26 year-old Rene Lugo, was taken into custody last weekend. Lugo has a prior history of arrest and had two strikes on his record at the time the crime was committed. At the time an arrest warrant was issued police decided to call in SWAT personnel to assist with its execution. Lugo could face life in prison if convicted and officers wanted to be proactive in terms of safety.
Those on the scene said he was taken into custody without incident. He has since been booked into the San Diego Central Jail and is being charged with numerous felonies including assault with a deadly weapon, being a felon in possession of a firearm, illegal discharge of a firearm and others. Bail has been set in excess of $365,000 meaning the cost for him to hire a San Diego bondsman would be in excess of $36,500. That fee is nonrefundable regardless as to the outcome of the case. Collateral would also be required to secure the bond.
Lugo is due to appear in court later this week.
