Members of the San Diego Police Department say they have arrested and detained a suspect who is believed to have savagely beaten a gas station patron with a crowbar earlier this week.
The incident unfolded last weekend when a bearded man pulled white truck and trailer into a Valencia Park gas station and began asking customers for money. A witness to the crime said the man initially approached the clerk to request free gas. He was declined. At that point he began approaching others who were filling up at the station. It wasn’t until a 25-year old man turned down the request that the bearded man returned with a crowbar. Surveillance footage indicates he struck the young customer multiple times in the head and chest before reentering his vehicle and driving off.
The victim was transported to a local hospital to be treated for serious injuries. He has not yet been released. SDPD officers said it was learned that defendant Clare Neighbor had ties to Huntington Beach. They promptly reached out to Orange County law enforcement agencies requesting their assistance in locating him. A source close to the investigation indicated Neighbor was arrested on Monday night and has since been booked into the San Diego Central Jail.
Neighbor has reportedly been charged on suspicion of attempted robbery and attempted murder. Bail information was not immediately available but it is believed his bail was set in excess of $500,000. Should he or a member of his family want to hire a San Diego bondsman their cost would be in excess of $50,000, or 10% of the total bail amount. The bondsman would also require collateral be posted based on the anticipated high bail amount.
