My friend was arrested at the San Ysidro border crossing three days ago. I’ve been looking on the San Diego Sheriff’s Department website and I can’t find him anywhere. I even called the Chula Vista Jail to see if they brought him there, but they don’t have him either. Shouldn’t he be showing up online by now?
Yes and no. Since your friend was arrested by federal agents, he wouldn’t be in one of the San Diego County Jails. Your friend was likely taken to MCC (the federal jail), which is in downtown San Diego. When someone is arrested on a federal case, they will need to have a detention hearing and a bail hearing before the judge sets their bail.
If the judge does grant bail, they can choose between three different types of bonds. If the judge wants something called a corporate surety bond, that’s when you’d call a bail bonds company. If the judge wants a property bond, a cash bond or a personal surety bond, you’ll need to do those directly with the court.
